Three careful steps. No shortcuts, no pressure washer.
Pressure washing strips the protective coating off roof tiles, forces water under them, and dramatically shortens roof life. Our scraping method is slower, kinder, and — paired with a biocide treatment — the results speak for themselves a few months later.
Hand scrape
We work tile by tile with specialist scraping tools to lift every visible patch of moss, algae and lichen by hand. Slow, methodical, and gentle on your tiles.
Day 1 · Roof safeClear & check
All debris is bagged, gutters and downpipes cleared of fallen growth, and your roof structure given a top-to-bottom visual check. Any concerns are flagged before we go further.
Same visitBiocide treatment
We apply a soft-spray biocide across the entire roof to kill remaining spores at the root. Over the next 3–6 months rain and weather work the surface back to a clean, even finish.
3–6 month transformationPressure washing is fast. It's also the worst thing you can do to a tiled roof.
A high-pressure hose looks dramatic on a video clip but it does real damage. Here's the honest comparison — the reason every roof we treat is hand-scraped, not blasted.
Quick now, expensive later
- ✕ Strips the granular coating off concrete tiles
- ✕ Forces water under tiles & into the loft
- ✕ Can crack or dislodge older slates and ridges
- ✕ Voids many tile manufacturers' warranties
- ✕ Moss returns harder & faster on a roughened surface
Gentle today, results in months

- ✓ No water forced anywhere it shouldn't be
- ✓ Safe on slate, concrete, clay and pantile
- ✓ Biocide kills spores at the root, not just on the surface
- ✓ Roof keeps getting cleaner for months after we leave
Same tiles. Same job. Before and after, in one shot.
The photo below is mid-job on a real customer roof — the left side has been hand-scraped and biocide-treated, the right side hasn't been touched yet. Hard to fake. Same tiles, same light, just one pass of the scraping tools between them.
Mid-job · same roof · both sides on display
The left side: scraped, cleared, biocide applied. The right side: exactly as we arrived. The original tile colour returning is what you'll see across your whole roof a few months after we leave.

Why don't you pressure wash like other companies?
Because pressure washing strips the protective coating off concrete tiles, can force water past flashings and ridges, and roughens the tile surface so moss grows back faster. Hand-scraping plus a biocide is slower work, but it's the right way to clean a roof if you actually want it to last.
How long does a roof scrape take?
A typical 3-bed semi is done in a single day. Larger or steeper roofs may need two. The biocide treatment is applied at the end of the same visit — you don't have to be home for follow-ups.
How quickly will it look clean after the biocide?
The visible scrape gives an immediate improvement. The full transformation happens over the following 3–6 months as the biocide kills off remaining spores and weathering does the rest.
Is it safe for older or fragile roofs?
Yes — hand-scraping is specifically the right approach for older clay, slate, and pantile roofs. We always do a visual inspection before starting and flag any tiles we'd want to replace before treating.
How much does it cost?
Every roof is different, so we price after a free site survey. The quote you get is the price you pay — no “while we're up there” extras. Most jobs are quoted within an hour of you sending us a couple of photos.
Do I need to be home?
No — provided we have access to the property and an outdoor tap. We send before/after photos and a written report by email the same day.
