Which Material Suits Your Garden And How To Choose It

The material you choose affects the look, cost, and upkeep of your patio. We help you compare the main options before you decide.

Natural stone: sandstone, limestone, and granite

We often recommend sandstone for Kent patios. It has warm colours. It has a natural texture for grip. It also suits both traditional and modern homes.

Limestone gives a cleaner and lighter finish. Granite is the toughest option. It has a tight grain and low porosity.

Natural stone does need sealing. This helps protect it from stains, algae, and weathering. We explain what to use and when to apply it during handover. The upkeep is worth it if you want a natural finish with real character.

We start with a site visit, not a phone price. Patios vary too much: in groundwork condition, in drainage requirements, in levels, for a meaningful quote without seeing the space. We don’t quote until we’ve visited, and we put the price in writing before any work starts. No work begins without your sign-off.

From there, the project runs in a straightforward sequence. We excavate to the depth required for the sub-base, compact the Type 1 material, lay the edge restraints, then bed and joint the surface. Porcelain and natural stone are set on a mortar bed. 

Block paving goes onto compacted sharp sand with haunched edging to hold the perimeter. Gravel is laid over compacted Type 1 with edging to define the boundary.

Do You Need Planning Permission Or Drainage Compliance For A Patio In Kent?

• For most rear garden patios in Kent, the answer is no. The work is treated as permitted development for a standard residential property.
• There are two situations where this changes:
• If your property is listed in a conservation area or subject to an Article 4 direction, additional restrictions may apply. We can advise at the site visit whether this affects your specific property.
• Front garden paving: any hard surface over 5 square metres at the front of a house that uses impermeable materials requires either a permeable surface or drainage directing run-off away from the highway. 

Kent County Council takes SUDS (Sustainable Drainage Systems) compliance seriously for new hard-standing. Permeable materials such as resin-bound gravel, permeable block paving, or gravel satisfy the requirement by allowing water to drain naturally.

Porcelain and non-permeable stone in a front garden will usually need drainage that directs runoff to a permeable area, or planning permission may be required. We factor this into every front garden project and specify drainage where it’s needed.
